Book Reviews Take 2
Let’s be honest, I know that you were waiting bated breath for my next series of book reviews. What? You didn’t know this was going to be a regular thing. Ha. Of course it is silly.
Subterranean – James Rollins
Well from my understanding and half-assed research this is Mr. Rollins first novel and by no means his best. I’ve become a huge fan of his Sigma series, and Alter of Eden and Amazonia are also good reads. This one, however, was just a little too weird for me. That said I couldn’t put the damn thing down. I certainly wanted to know what happened. If you are looking for a brainless quick read there are worse books out there. If you are longing for some mind stimulating science based action adventure skip this one.
The Dark Half – Stephen King
I read this book because it was the introduction of Sheriff Alan Pangborn who’d I’d developed a sort of literary crush on in Needful Things. My feelings on this book ebbed and flowed like the tide. Initially I was intrigued by the mysteriousness of the bad guy, I actually had to turn all the lights on in the house at one point. The beginning was genuinely creepy. Then once he became a prominent character in the novel it sort of lost its appeal for me. I had to make myself through a few chapters right in the middle. However, once I pushed through it changing my perception of the story, it ended up being good. I don’t think it is one of Mr. King’s best, but worth the read. It is especially interesting if you are also a fan of Richard Bachman’s work.
Olive Kitteridge – Elizabeth Strout
This is book I never would have read if it hadn’t been for book club. The basic premise an older woman, Olive, in Maine is upset by the changes she is seeing in her town and life. Nothing to write home about for sure, however, that description hardly does it justice. The only word I can think of to describe it is: beautiful. It is one of the most touching and sweet stories I have ever read. The characters are shocking tangible and pure. The emotions are raw and real. There are very few books that I can recommend with as much fervor as I recommend this one. It reminds me of a Nicholas Sparks type of story but without the weeping. The books is actually a series of short stories, some of them Olive is predominate in and sometimes she is just a passing character, but each story is interesting and brings something to the book as a whole. I loved it.
Jobless Book Reviews
As I’ve had a lot of free time to read, I will now provide all of you with my well thought out review of the books that I have read so far.
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. – Basically a different take on the Salem Witch Trials. Not a particularly well written book, but it was interesting enough that I wanted to finish it and find out what happened. All the quotes on the outside talk about a big twist that will surprise you, I can assure you that if your brain is in proper working order it will not be a big surprise. The reaction will be more along the lines of “That is the surprise? Really?”
The First Annual Grand Prairie Rabbit Festival by Ken Wheaton – Let me start off by saying that by no means is this a great American novel. It is basically about small town Louisiana and the Rabbit Festival that the Catholic Church in town is starting to show up the Pentecostals that have moved into town. I know it doesn’t sound like much but I honest to God laughed until I cried more than once. It was absolutely hilarious and surprisingly human and touching in places. I highly recommend this one.
The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larrson – If you haven’t read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, then obviously you don’t want to read this on. But might I suggest that if you go out and read that one immediately. Played with Fire is the sequel and is also VERY good. They are just told in such a different manner than the usual crime/suspense novels. However, as fair warning this one is cliff hanger, which kind of annoyed me. They are not short novels and I was ready for this particular story to be over and hoping that the third novel would be a completely different story. It is not.
Fever Dream by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child – The most recent in the Agent Pendergast series that started with Relic. And this is actually the first one in quite a few that I absolutely couldn’t put down. Agent Pendergast figures out that all those years ago his wife’s death wasn’t accidental but murder and he is determined to find those responsible. Like The Girl Who Played with Fire this novel clearly leaves room for the next novel in the series, however it is also a complete stand alone story. If you haven’t read any of the previous ones you will not get all the references, however they are by no means necessary to enjoy this book.
Etta: a Novel by Gerald Koplan – This is probably the only read so far that I can’t recommend or even find all that much nice to say about. I read it for book club and it stimulated very little conversation. It was contrived, put together with an odd mix of real historical figures and fictional characters, and suffers from Portrait of a Lady disease. Basically it is a male author writing about in inner workings of the female character and failing miserably. The basic premise is Etta is the woman who was married to the Sundance Kid, other than the fact that she existed absolutely nothing is known about her. It’s only high point, it can be read in about 3 hours.
Needful Things by Stephen King – I’ve read this one before, but it is one of my favorite books. Basically the Devil himself comes to King’s beautiful Castle Rock, Maine. He opens a store and collects souls. It is a long novel, but like most of King’s work the characters will make you fly through the pages. Also like most of King’s work the ending leaves a little something to be desired. He is easily one of the best contemporary writers, but damn he can’t end a book to save his life. It isn’t as creepy as some of his other works, like ‘Salem’s Lot and isn’t as literarily significant as a work like The Stand. And while the movie version isn’t wonderful, Max von Sydow plays the devil and his performance is amazing.
Unnatural Causes by P.D. James. – I’m a big fan of the traditional mystery and P.D. James is one of my favorites. This work is from the late 60’s so it is far from contemporary but I’ll read anything with Adam Dalgliesh, he is as good as any character that Agatha Christie created. This is also a very quick read and I was surprised by who the killer is. If you like mysteries and haven’t read Ms. James I can assure you that you won’t be sorry.
Magnetic Poetry – by Michelle
see power beneath a whisper
drive music away with play
manipulate essential chains
worship purple shadows
languidly dream
My magnetic poetry.(a new way to amuse myself)
if you recall chocolate mist
then it sleeps to gift goddess
for winter sausage shake fiddle
is a repulsive void smear apparatus
- the poem in its natural habitat

My flip to the dark (Dalek) side.
Like most children born after the invention of television, it played a fundamental roll in my childhood development. I spent countless hours with Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and the best of them all Scooby Doo. I loved, and still do love, the TV. But with all things, when there is great joy, there is also great sorrow. Until I reached the age of 10 there was only 1 television in our house, shocking I know, but they weren’t as cheap then and my parents kept having other kids. There were other expenses like diapers, food and no extra money to spend buying me a television. The burden of the single television household meant that I wasn’t the only one who would have a say in what was going to be watched, my parents had the nerve to insist on regular television viewing. Now you might think that the worst things forced upon me involved Walter Cronkite, Ronald Regan, or Phil Donahue. You’d be wrong. Indeed the worst thing I was ever exposed to was this guy:
Yes, that’s right. Dr. Who. When I’d see that bastard with his stupid scarf and his curly hair I knew it was going to be a horrible night. I’d sit quietly and not so quietly while subjected to the absolute torture that was this campy show with his Time Wars and electronic Canines. My hatred was so intense that it carried on into adulthood. When the show came into its second(or third or forth) wind of popularity this decade I avoided it like the plague, absolutely refusing to even flip the channel by the stupid show. People would tell me repeatedly that I’d like it. But hell no, I wasn’t gonna give that show a chance, it was forced upon me as a kid. It was evil. I hated it.
Well, then I talked to my cousin Bobby. Bobby and I have a long list of similar interest, if he tells me it’s good I am inclined to believe it. And with the newly discovered ability to watch Netflix instant view movies through my Wii, and that fact that Dr. Who is available to watch, I decided to give it a shot. Well, guess what? I freakin’ love it. And have (not so) sadly become one of those people.
I’m still on this guy.
But will soon encounter this guy.
He is apparently one of the forerunners for the best Dr. ever.
If all goes according to plan, it won’t be too long before I’m moving backwards, eventually once again encountering scarf man and this one too.
I would also like to offer an formal apology to my childhood self, partly that I’m caving like a cheap deck chair and partly my stubbornness (I understand that many of you will find this a shocking character trait of mine) and complete unwillingness to give a good show a chance. Also, I’d like to apologize to my parents for any tantrums or other inconvenient behavior that resulted from my dislike of this program. Yeah, I was a brat. Sorry ‘bout that.
